About Initiascapes
09/05/2011

Mapping Initiatives

Forsyth Futures developed, and copyrighted, the concept of the Initiascape© as an information tool that allows the community to analyze what programs are currently working on an initiative, and determine how these programs are connected to each other.

The term Initiascape© is the combination of the words initiative and landscape, and provides a depiction of the landscape of a community’s initiatives. Initiascapes© are visual and descriptive representations that document the connections between programs/organizations involved in a specific initiative. The Initiascape© section is also designed to allow the user to access layers of information relevant to programs within the Initiascape©. Examples of this information include program location and contact information, structure, objectives, and services provided.

Due to the fluctuating nature of community initiatives all Initiascapes© contain point-in-time data. However, an effort is made by the Forsyth Futures staff to make sure all data is accurate and to provide the date last updated. If you would like to submit a program for inclusion in an Initiascape©, or to correct information about your program, please fill out the following form.

Forsyth Futures has the following intentions for the release of Initiascapes©:

  • Provide a guide map to the landscape of a local initiative
  • Promote an understanding of the current scope of work in an initiative
  • Break down the efforts involved in an initiative by programs
  • Assist community conversations move towards strategic actions

About Indicators
09/05/2011

Creating Issue Awareness

Community indicators are measures used for tracking data on issues we value as a community, and allow for comparison of measures over time. Forsyth Futures first started tracking community indicators in 2008 with the release of the first Making Progress Report (MPR). Indicators included in the first MPR were selected by the community to measure progress in five results areas: Economic Self Sufficiency, Educational Success, Engaged Community, Mental and Physical Health, and Safety.  The second Forsyth Futures’ indicator report was released as “Making Progress 2009: A Catalyst for Change.”

Since 2009, the MPR has evolved into a series of Making Progress Reports for each results area, published throughout the year. Forsyth Futures has also added a sixth results area, Sustainable Environment.

The Indicator section on the website provides residents an opportunity to browse all sectors, indicators, and measures found within the Making Progress Reports, as well as additional measures related to the selected community indicators.

Forsyth Futures has the following intentions for the release of community indicators:

  • Raise awareness of current issues, conditions and trends in the six different results areas.
  • Determine where the community is making progress and where more efforts are needed.
  • Help residents of Forsyth County understand data and use it more effectively to guide community change.
  • Allow organizations to develop new practices and partnerships to address community issues.

Disclaimer

Caveats about accuracy
Forsyth Futures has been very careful in collecting, analyzing, and presenting data from a variety of sources. Although Forsyth Futures has judged its data sources to be reliable, it was not possible to authenticate all data. If careful users of the website discover data errors or typographical errors, Forsyth Futures welcomes this feedback and will incorporate corrections into its periodic data updates.

Geography

Because the indicators are focused on Forsyth County, North Carolina, the primary geography reported is Forsyth County. To provide a basis for comparisons, some indicators include data from other geographies such as the 8 municipalities in Forsyth County, the Winston-Salem Metropolitan Statistical Area, state of North Carolina, select North Carolina counties and the United States.

Age of the data

Users will notice differences across indicators in the age of the data. There are many reasons for this. Because of the time needed to collect, analyze, and disseminate data, “new” annual data sets may be from one to two years old. The indicators also use data from sources where new data is not available annually, and updates may be possible only every three, five, or even ten years. For data that is not publicly available from a website or report, Forsyth Futures is dependent on staff of other organizations for updates; these are noted as personal communications. Other factors also limit the ability to update the indicators. For example, data that were previously available may have been discontinued or cannot be used due to changes in definitions or reporting mechanisms. Some data cannot be updated because they include data from one-time research reports. Although all of the original indicator categories were included in the initial website development, over time, indicators that cannot be updated may be removed.

Data labels and terminology

Forsyth Futures chose to retain the terminology used by the original source when presenting the indicator data. This is most evident in data labels for race and geography. For example, some data sources use the term “black,” while others use “African-American.” Definitions and explanations of the data labels are provided on the data pages.

Data analysis

The key findings tab for each of the indicators summarizes key points drawn from the data tables and graphs. In some cases, Forsyth Futures uses the term “significant” in the analysis. The use of this term does not imply statistical significance. Rather, it indicates that, in the opinion of Forsyth Futures, change over time or differences between demographic groups or geographic locations are great enough to be noteworthy.

Feedback and Suggestions
Forsyth Futures welcomes the feedback of users on how we can improve the site and make it more useful. If you have comments, questions, or suggestions please contact us at staff@forysthfuures.org.

This data helps us to analyze and improve the usefulness of the information we provide at these websites.

Like most commercial website owners, we may use what is known as "cookie" technology. A "cookie" is an element of data that a website can send to your browser when you link to that website. The cookie does not extract other personal information about you, such as your name or address.

We may also use what is known as "client-side page tagging", which uses code on each page to write certain information about the page and the visitor to a log when a page is rendered by your web browser. This technique is also commonly used on commercial websites. "Tagging" does result in a JavaScript program running on your computer, but it is limited to providing information about the page that you are requesting and the configuration of your browser. It will not read any of your data files, or execute any additional programs. It does not extract any personal information about you, such as your name or address. About Forsyth Futures
07/18/2011

Our Vision

Forsyth County’s diverse residents and community organizations effectively collaborate to focus on issues, make decisions, and take actions to improve the quality of life.

Our Mission

Forsyth Futures puts community knowledge to work by providing an objective broad view of local information, being a catalyst, connecting people, and serving as a convener.

What we do

Forsyth Futures seeks to enhance the ability to expand community knowledge by coordinating and providing a platform for supporting all residents, organizations, and agencies that reside within Forsyth County.

    How we do it

How is Forsyth Futures Engaging the Community?

Community knowledge is obtained by tracking issue indicators to identify community conditions, trends, and needs in six areas: (1) economic self-sufficiency/development, (2) civic engagement, (3) educational success, (4) mental and physical health, (5) safety and (6) environmental stewardship.  Forsyth Futures uses other community information tools such as Initiascape© software, a program which documents the landscape of the community’s initiatives around an issue. This tool also demonstrates the links between individuals, organizations or groups working on an issue. Forsyth Futures then provides and/or applies this knowledge by leading or supporting initiatives that strategically address community issues.

      The Results

As a result of Forsyth Futures’ work, Forsyth County residents, organizations and leaders can:

      • Access or link to local data and research.
      • Identify community resources.
      • Build and share knowledge.
      • Find audiences for their work.
      • Have strategic community conversations.
      • Shape paths to action.
      • Act.

      The Benefits

The benefits of connecting to Forsyth Futures include:

      • Reduce the time community spends looking for local data and resources.
      • Initiative, jump-start or link community conversations.
