33.  Key Current Realities Together

Enrollment

§      For the 2008-09, school year approximately 57,000 students were enrolled in Kindergarten-12th grade.

§      Approximately 91% of the school-aged children attended one of the 77 public schools located in Forsyth County and 9% attended one of the 25 private schools located in Forsyth County or were home schooled.

§      Five charter schools are located in Forsyth County which ranks as third (tied with Durham) behind Wake (2nd) and Mecklenburg (1st) for the number of charter schools per county.

Adult Basic Literacy

§      During the 2008-09 academic year, at Forsyth Technical Community College, 6,625 adults took a placement examination for one of the Adult Basic Education courses indicating that they lacked skills in reading, writing, speaking, problem-solving or computation at a level necessary to function in society, on a job or in the family.  Of these, 5,601 were administered the adult basic education examinations, while 502 were interested in high school credentials (AHS or GED). 

§      The total number of individuals with English as a Second Language seeking literacy assistance at Forsyth Technical Community College in 2009 was 2,347 adults which represents 21.66% more adults than the total ESL course (beginning-advanced levels) enrollment  in 2007-2008 (Note: 2008-2009 ESL course completion will be updated in June 2010). 

§      The number of high school dropouts who enrolled in a basic skills program at Forsyth Technical Community College increased by 30.60% from the 2006-2007(N= 621) to 2007-2008 academic year (N=811)

Educational Attainment

§      The 2008 rate for Forsyth County adults who were at least a high school graduate was 48.6%, which is 0.4% higher than the 2007 rate.

§       38.1% of Forsyth County adults had an Associate’s degree or higher in 2008. This represents a decrease of 0.9% from 2007, but is higher than the North Carolina 2008 rate (34.2%).

§       31.6% of Forsyth County adults had a Bachelor’s degree or higher in 2008. This represents a 0.3% increase from 2007, is higher than the 2000 census projected educational attainment for 2008 (30.70%), and the actual 2008 North Carolina rate (26.1%).

§      In 2008, 10.5% of Forsyth County adults had a Graduate or Professional degree or higher compared to 8.6% for the state of North Carolina.

§      Total higher education enrollments at the largest 5 universities/colleges in Forsyth County have decreased by 15.6% from 2006-2007 (N=26,575) to the 2008-2009 (N=22,981).

Kindergarten Readiness (Local Study, N=400)

 

§      The average age-level for language and cognitive development was five and a half years for children at or near the conclusion of preschool. Approximately 26% of the children, however, were below age-level in intellectual and linguistic development at or near the conclusion of preschool.

§       In Kindergarten approximately 18% of the same children remained below age/grade level in literacy and writing while 8% were below age/grade level in mathematics.

§       In 1st grade 17% of these same children were below grade level in literacy, 27% in writing and 10% in mathematics.

§       More than half of the children demonstrated needs in multiple academic areas.

High School Graduates

§      For School Year (SY) 2008-2009, the total number of students who graduated from a public or private high school in 4 years in Forsyth County was approximately 3,200.

§      WS/FCS high graduation rates have increased over the past 2 years.

§      High School graduation rates for WS/FCS have been above the state average for each of the last 4 years.

§      Hispanics, Native Americans, and limited English proficient WS/FCS students had 4 year and 5 year graduation rates of 50% or less in SY 2008-2009.

§      Females accounted for more of the 4 year WS/FCS graduates in SY 2008-2009 (females=77.4%, males=68.1%).

§      West Forsyth High School has the highest 4 year graduation rate for SY 2008-2009 in the WS/FCS (87%)

§      Atkins High School has the lowest 4 year graduation rate for SY 2008-2009 in the WS/FCS (60%).

§      WS/FCS is among the counties with the largest 3-year dropout increases.

§      For SY 2007-2008, there were 898 WS/FCS dropouts (grades 9-12).

Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools Annual Progress

§      The total percentage of all WS/FCS meeting Adequately Yearly Progress was approximately 3% below the state percentage.

§       50 of Forsyth County’s 78 schools achieved adequate yearly progress for the 2008–2009 school year.

§       4 out of the 11 Forsyth County High Schools achieved adequate yearly progress for the 2008– 2009 school year.

§      Forsyth County rates fall below the state average for 5 of the 6 gateway year tests.
