§ For
the 2008-09, school year approximately 57,000 students were
enrolled in Kindergarten-12th grade.
§ Approximately
91% of the school-aged children attended one of the 77 public
schools located in Forsyth County and 9% attended one of the 25
private schools located in Forsyth County or were home schooled.
§ Five
charter schools are located in Forsyth County which ranks as third
(tied with Durham) behind Wake (2nd) and Mecklenburg (1st)
for the number of charter schools per county. |

Adult Basic Literacy |
|
§ During the 2008-09
academic year, at Forsyth Technical Community College, 6,625
adults took a placement examination for one of the Adult Basic
Education courses indicating that they lacked skills in reading,
writing, speaking, problem-solving or computation at a level
necessary to function in society, on a job or in the family. Of
these, 5,601 were administered the adult basic education
examinations, while 502 were interested in high school credentials
(AHS or GED).
§ The total number of
individuals with English as a Second Language seeking literacy
assistance at Forsyth Technical Community College in 2009 was
2,347 adults which represents 21.66% more adults than the total
ESL course (beginning-advanced levels) enrollment in 2007-2008
(Note: 2008-2009 ESL course completion will be updated in June
2010).
§ The number of high
school dropouts who enrolled in a basic skills program at Forsyth
Technical Community College increased by 30.60% from the
2006-2007(N= 621) to 2007-2008 academic year (N=811) |

§ The
2008 rate for Forsyth County adults who were at least a high school
graduate was 48.6%, which is 0.4% higher than the 2007 rate.
§
38.1% of
Forsyth County adults had an Associate’s degree or higher in 2008.
This represents a decrease of 0.9% from 2007, but is higher than the
North Carolina 2008 rate (34.2%).
§ 31.6%
of Forsyth County adults had a Bachelor’s degree or higher in 2008.
This represents a 0.3% increase from 2007, is higher than the 2000
census projected educational attainment for 2008 (30.70%), and the
actual 2008 North Carolina rate (26.1%).
§ In
2008, 10.5% of Forsyth County adults had a Graduate or Professional
degree or higher compared to 8.6% for the state of North Carolina.
§ Total
higher education enrollments at the largest 5 universities/colleges
in Forsyth County have decreased by 15.6% from 2006-2007 (N=26,575)
to the 2008-2009 (N=22,981). |

§ The
average age-level for language and cognitive development was five
and a half years for children at or near the conclusion of
preschool. Approximately 26% of the children, however, were below
age-level in intellectual and linguistic development at or near the
conclusion of preschool.
§ In
Kindergarten approximately 18% of the same children remained below
age/grade level in literacy and writing while 8% were below
age/grade level in mathematics.
§ In
1st grade 17% of these same children were below grade
level in literacy, 27% in writing and 10% in mathematics.
§ More
than half of the children demonstrated needs in multiple academic
areas. |

|
§ For
School Year (SY) 2008-2009, the total number of students who
graduated from a public or private high school in 4 years in Forsyth
County was approximately 3,200.
§ WS/FCS
high graduation rates have increased over the past 2 years.
§ High
School graduation rates for WS/FCS have been above the state average
for each of the last 4 years.
§ Hispanics,
Native Americans, and limited English proficient WS/FCS students had
4 year and 5 year graduation rates of 50% or less in SY 2008-2009.
§ Females
accounted for more of the 4 year WS/FCS graduates in SY 2008-2009
(females=77.4%, males=68.1%).
§ West
Forsyth High School has the highest 4 year graduation rate for SY
2008-2009 in the WS/FCS (87%)
§
Atkins High
School has the lowest 4 year graduation rate for SY 2008-2009 in the
WS/FCS (60%).
§ WS/FCS
